Monday: the free-plans day
On Monday the Thyssen opens 12:00 to 4:00 pm with free entry to the permanent collection, and the Reina Sofía and the Prado have their free afternoon slots. It is a good day for museums on a tight budget, but Debod is closed. Details in free museums in Madrid.
Tuesday: no Reina Sofía
The Reina Sofía closes on Tuesdays. Swap it for the Thyssen (10:00 am-7:00 pm) or a walk through the Retiro and the Campo del Moro. Gardens are in free gardens in Madrid: winter hours.
How to organise your week
- Book the museums that close one day (Reina Sofía on Tuesdays) once you know your dates.
- Leave Debod for a Tuesday to Sunday, and El Capricho for the weekend.
- Check local holidays: on 9 November (Almudena) some museums close.
A plan that never closes
If your week has gaps because of closures, a private 1-hour tuk tuk works any day of the week. See also our Madrid in two days guide.
