Quick answer
Madrid’s Christmas lights go on in late November and stay on until Three Kings’ Day (in 2025-2026, from 22 November to 6 January). By tuk tuk you can see the brightest spots in the centre in an hour: Calle de Alcalá, Cibeles, Puerta de Alcalá, Paseo del Prado, Plaza Mayor with its market and Gran Vía. Book a private tour after dark: the 1-hour tour costs €100 per tuk tuk for up to 4 people.
When Madrid’s Christmas lights go on
The City Council switches the lights on in late November and keeps them on until 6 January. In 2025-2026 they went on on 22 November in Plaza de Cibeles and covered more than 240 locations across all 21 districts, with over 13 million LED bulbs. This year’s date is announced in the council’s Christmas programme.
The lights come on every evening at dusk, around 6 pm, and go off at midnight or a little later at weekends. Check this year’s times on the official website before you book.
The tuk tuk route to see the lights
A suggested loop from Puerta del Sol, in this order:
- Calle de Alcalá, between Sol and Cibeles: One of the most spectacular stretches, with arches of warm-toned lights.
- Plaza de Cibeles: Where the lights are switched on each year, with the Cibeles Palace lit up.
- Puerta de Alcalá and the Retiro entrance: A life-size nativity scene at the gate and stained-glass-style light panels on Plaza de la Independencia.
- Paseo del Prado: The giant light-up Menina next to the Apollo fountain.
- Parliament and Plaza de Canalejas: A light-up nativity scene opposite the Congress and lights that frame the grand buildings of Canalejas.
- Plaza Mayor: The Christmas market and the big tree: Madrid’s most traditional Christmas.
- Calle Bailén and Plaza de España: The giant ball of lights, a favourite every year.
- Gran Vía: With a new lighting design since 2025 and a giant light-up fir tree where it meets Calle de Alcalá.
Pedestrian streets such as Preciados, Montera and Arenal are best seen on foot: the tuk tuk drops you nearby and you can walk them in a few minutes. The designs change a little every year (the ones in this guide are from 2025-2026), so we adapt the route to what is lit up.

The price is per tuk tuk and the same as during the day. When you book, or on WhatsApp, tell us you’d like the Christmas lights route.
Tuk tuk or the Christmas lights bus
Every Christmas the City Council runs Naviluz, an open-top bus that tours the illuminated streets. It’s shared, follows a fixed route, is priced per person and seats go fast. The tuk tuk is the private alternative: just your group, starting at Puerta del Sol or your hotel, with a driver-guide who tells you about each place, and you can hop off for photos.
Tips
- Wrap up warm: December nights are cold in Madrid, and you’re outdoors at the stops.
- Book ahead for weekend evenings and the early-December bank holidays, the busiest dates.
- On the busiest days there may be road closures in the centre: if they affect your tour, we adapt the route.
- Hotel pickup costs €20 extra; ask for it before the tour.
