SIM and eSIM for tourists in Spain: what to buy when you land in Madrid

Updated on · Madrid Tuk tuk Bernabéu Tours

Quick answer

Digi's website sells prepaid plans from €3 (5 GB) and €5 (25 GB with 100 minutes), up to €10 for 100 GB with 400 international minutes. Under its terms you can only sign up if you are 18+, in Spain and prove your identity with a valid document Digi accepts. Use it inside Spain; EU roaming requires living in Spain or having stable ties.

Digi plans we saw on its official website

Digi is a Spanish operator with very low prices and sells these plans on the prepaid page of its website. These are the plans its website showed on 18 October 2026 (final monthly price, data rolls over):

PlanPriceCalls
5 GB€3100 national min
25 GB€5100 national and international min
50 GB€7Unlimited national + 100 international min
100 GB€10Unlimited national + 400 international min
150 GB€12Unlimited national + 800 international min

International minutes only apply to the countries on Digi's list; other destinations are charged per minute. Prices can change.

How to get the SIM and which documents you need

  • Where: according to Digi, new customers request the SIM at a point of sale and can keep their number or get a new one. You must be over 18 and in Spain.
  • Document: Digi's prepaid terms say the service is activated only if you prove your identity with a valid document accepted by Digi. By law (Law 25/2007) the operator records your name, nationality and the type and number of your document. Bring your valid passport; Digi's terms do not list which documents it accepts, so confirm at the point of sale or on 1200 / +34 919 120 120.
  • Activation and top-up: prepaid customers activate a plan in the Mi Digi app or by dialling *100#.
  • eSIM: Digi's eSIM page describes the eSIM for contract mobile customers with a Spanish number and does not mention prepaid. For a tourist, the safe option is the physical SIM.

Using it in Spain and in the rest of Europe

  1. In Spain your plan's national conditions apply: included data and minutes, like any customer.
  2. EU roaming: Digi's terms require habitual residence in Spain or stable ties with the country, and Digi may ask for proof. A visitor should not count on using their data in other EU countries without extra charges. Use is also measured by a fair use policy (for example, a data cap per plan in the EU).
  3. Calls home: check that your country is on the included list and how many minutes you get.
  4. Length: plans renew every month while you have balance. If you stay only a few days, switch off the renewal.

If you would rather buy nothing, your home operator may offer roaming data in Spain; compare its price with the ones above.

What about data eSIMs from other brands?

There are many travel data eSIMs, but most comparisons we found are written by the brands themselves, with prices that change. We do not recommend a specific one: check on its official site the price per GB, the days of validity and whether it includes a phone number for calls.
